Reading (and Social Studies)

Reading is our focus! It builds the foundation for all other subject areas. CFIS 5th grade Literacy teachers have identified several ESSENTIAL standards for the year which will be our main focus for teaching. We will continue to teach other standards as well, but we believe these essential standards are the most vital to our students’ success.

Each week, we will have an anchor text. The anchor text will generally be an article, short story, or poem. We will use this text to teach our essential standards. Most of our anchor texts can be found on ReadWorks.org or CommonLit.org. Your student will have an account for each of these websites and will be able to access assignments from home.

DAILY HOMEWORK: READ FOR 20 MINUTES EACH NIGHT ON MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND THURSDAY. KEEP A READING LOG.

Students will receive a new reading log every other week. It is front and back. After the student reads, he/she is to write the title and author and one or two sentences about what he/she read. The students are required to get a parent/guardian signature and to date each entry in order for the reading log to be considered complete.

Reading logs will not be graded. Students will receive one ticket per reading log entry. (Tickets are for Fun Friday.) Reading logs are also a part of Bailey Bingo. (If a student completes all reading logs for that month, Mrs. Bailey will initial those spaces on the Bailey Bingo card.)

Research shows that the more a person reads, the better reader he/she becomes! Please partner with me and help get your child excited about reading!
